During the final semester of my senior year of high school, I was granted permission by the music department to take on an independent study project. I wanted to try to write a musical based on Jesus’ parable of the prodigal son. And spending hours upon hours alone in a rehearsal studio with only a piano and the tangible presence of God as I meditated on his love expressed in that story was one of the most amazing experiences of my life. This is one of the songs that arose from those moments of encounter. It became the climax for the rest of the musical (The Prodigal) that formed around it and tries to capture the incredible beauty of that rich scene of restoration.
Together
Words & music by Randy Boldt
[The Prodigal]
Father, there aren’t any words I can say
I’m just so sorry I went away
But here in Your arms is where I want to stay
Forever
[The Father]
My son, you have made Me so very happy
I’ve been waiting here for the first glimpse I’d see
Of you on the road coming back to Me
And now you’re here
[The Prodigal and the Father]
Together we shall live forever you and I
Side by side
With hearts open wide
To one another
To each other we’ll say
”I love you”
[The Prodigal]
But Father, I can no longer be in Your family
After all I’ve done I’m not worthy
But deep in my heart I long to be
Near You
[The Father]
My son, can’t you see that it’s My good pleasure
To pour out My love and My treasure
Into your life beyond measure
Please let Me
[The Prodigal and the Father]
Together we shall live forever you and I
Side by side
With hearts open wide
To one another
To each other we’ll say
”I love you”
