Sue and I were married on May 25, 1974. I composed this song a few years later while reflecting on the wonder of the moment when we locked eyes and joined hands before our friends and family on that day pledging our love to one another in the presence of God. We knew then, even though very young, immature, and untested by life, that we were crossing the threshold into what was going to be a lifelong journey of growth and discovery. As I wrote, I tried to capture both the sense of expectancy we experienced at its joyful beginning as well as the settled assurance we’d gained in the time since that the one whose love was leading us forward would be with us all along the way.
Learning to Love
Words & music by Randy Boldt
Look into my eyes they can tell you how I feel
The love that God has given to me for you is so very real
Far beyond what I could have hoped for
Far beyond what I could have dreamed
We’re living in a world that can’t be described
And it’s just as real as it seems
And we’re learning to love in Jesus
Yes, we’re learning to love in the Lord
And though our love’s tested and tried in the fire
Still this tree that God’s planted will keep growing higher
Growing high
Place your hand in mine as we begin our life together
Knowing that our love will last forever
Always growing stronger
Standing against the storm
For though the world grows cold around us
God’s love keeps us warm
And we’re learning to love in Jesus
Yes, we’re learning to love in the Lord
And though our love’s tested and tried in the fire
Still this tree that God’s planted will keep growing higher
Growing higher
Growing high
